Workwear's most useful jacket has become a wardrobe default. Rooted in French and American work clothing, it is essentially a boxy cotton or moleskin shell with three or four patch pockets and no lapels. Editors describe reaching for one almost daily: warm enough for a cool morning, casual enough over a T-shirt, tidy enough over a shirt.
