Sashiko, the traditional Japanese embroidery method with dense, reinforcing rows of stitches, is currently attracting attention as a textile design element. Characteristic of this is the resulting, often heavy weight of the fabric: the reinforcing seams make Sashiko fabrics robust and dense. As one commentary notes, heavy fabrics are generally appreciated but are not practical in every situation. The technique thus remains a field of tension between craftsmanship quality, visual structure and functional wearing comfort, without allowing for a definitive statement about the spread or development of the trend.
