Light-powered quartz has stopped being the budget option. Citizen has run Eco-Drive for fifty years, and Alpina has now moved solar movements into its Startimer Pilot and Alpiner lines, using the smaller calibre to cut several millimetres off the case — 38mm instead of 40mm, and noticeably thinner. The practical argument stays the same: no winding, no battery changes, months of running in total darkness. The new argument is that it no longer has to look cheap.
