Fringe has moved from a Western reference to a general-purpose way of adding movement. It is turning up on suede jackets, on scarves knotted at the hip, and on shoes, and it appeared alongside feathers as one of the theatrical flourishes dominating street style in Paris. The bohemian streak it carries is closer to seventies rock than to the festival styling of earlier revivals, and it is being grounded with plain denim rather than layered ornament.
